The goal of the IE² graduate program is to train students to think independently, creatively, and critically about questions in ecology and evolutionary biology. Students learn to design and carry out original research that integrates fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and computational approaches to understand the processes shaping biodiversity, adaptation, and ecosystem function.Graduate students apply to and matriculate through the Department of Biology, which administers admissions and coursework. Once admitted, students are free to pursue thesis research with any IE² faculty member, regardless of departmental affiliation. Training is tailored to each student’s background and interests and is enriched by opportunities to collaborate with faculty across campus, including the Institutes of Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, and Marine Biology, as well as departments in computer science, data science, geology, geography, and environmental studies.Because only academic departments (and not institutes) confer degrees at the University of Oregon, students should apply through the Biology Department. More information on the application process, admissions requirements, and deadlines is available on the Biology Department website.
The University encourages all qualified individuals to apply and does not discriminate on the basis of any protected status, including veteran and disability status. The UO is committed to ensuring that all students have access to a quality learning experience and the opportunity to pursue their academic goals in a safe, supportive learning environment.
