Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE²)

The Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE²) at the University of Oregon brings together researchers and students to study the processes that shape life—from genomes to ecosystems. Our scientists investigate the dynamics of evolution, ecology, and biodiversity using approaches that span molecules, populations, and entire landscapes.

Title of Card/Link

IE² researchers explore the origins, diversity, and dynamics of life on Earth. Our work ranges from molecular evolution and evolutionary genetics to microbial, population, community, and ecosystem ecology. Combining fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and computational modeling, we advance understanding of the natural world and address pressing challenges in conservation, health, and climate change.

Graduate Program

We train graduate students to think critically and creatively about ecological and evolutionary questions. Students gain hands-on experience in the lab and field, develop strong quantitative and computational skills, and engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research. Our program prepares graduates for diverse careers in academia, industry, conservation, government, and beyond.

Community

IE² fosters a collaborative and supportive community through seminars, journal clubs, and interdisciplinary initiatives. Our faculty, students, and affiliates maintain strong ties with departments and institutes across campus, creating an environment where intellectual exchange and mentorship thrive. We are committed to building an inclusive community that values diverse perspectives and experiences.
