The Louca lab is excited to host Dr. Benoît Perez-Lamarque for this week's Institute of Ecology and Evolution seminar. Dr. Perez-Lamarque is an Assistant Professor at Université de Toulouse, where he uses phylogenetics and interaction networks to study the ecology and evolution of biotic interactions. Dr. Perez-Lamarque will be presenting remotely from France, so there will be a limited number of times to sign-up to meet with him after the seminar. Please follow the link to schedule a meeting time with him, and see his talk title and abstract below.
-----Biogeography of biotic interactions Biotic interactions are fundamental to the structure and functioning of ecosystems. A major research goal is to understand how these interactions assemble and evolve over time. By examining phylogenetic trees alongside present-day interaction networks, we can in particular identify patterns of cophylogeny and phylosymbiosis and explore the processes that generate them. Among the factors shaping these patterns, biogeography plays a crucial, yet often underestimated, role. Indeed, the geographic distribution of species fundamentally determines which organisms can interact, thereby influencing the structure of interaction networks. After defining the different patterns of cophylogeny and phylosymbiosis, I will highlight during this seminar how biogeographic processes contribute to these patterns and shape the dynamics of biotic interactions across space and time.
